If your hedges act as a privacy fence, you may not be able to reach the tops of them to trim with your regular equipment, so you need a pole hedge trimmer. Depending on the length of your hedge, working with a pole hedge trimmer can get very exhausting. It was the same for me, so I tried to find the lightest corded pole hedge trimmer available.

Here are some of the lightest corded pole hedge trimmers available:

  1. Sun Joe SJH902E Multi-Angle Telescoping Hedge Trimmer – 8.8 pounds (4 kg)
  2. Earthwise CVPH43018 Corded Convertible Pole Hedge Trimmer- 9.7 pounds (4.39 kg)
  3. GARCARE Corded Electric Pole Hedge Trimmer – 10 pounds (4.5 kg)

We all know that having the right tool for the right job makes our lives better and satisfies us. So, let’s look at what pole trimmers do, why you need one, and some of these tools’ elements. You can find all these products on Amazon.com.

1. Sun Joe SJH902E Multi-Angle Telescoping Hedge Trimmer

At a feather-light 8.8 pounds (4 kg), this is a trimmer that feels like you could use it all afternoon. Remember that the farther out you extend your cutting blades, the heavier the unit will feel (no matter what it actually weighs), and the fact that this trimmer extends to almost 8 feet (2.43 m) means there will be some imbalance, but not too much because that’s not all that far. Still, a person of average height will be able to trim surfaces up to 13 feet (4 m) off the ground.

This trimmer also allows for the angling of the blades. So, for instance, you could stand on the ground, push the blade into a position so that it’s parallel to the ground, then extend it and cut the top of your 12-foot (3.7 m) privacy hedges flat without a ladder. Pretty cool!

The blades are 21 inches (0.5 m) long with a .7-inch (1.78 cm) cutting capacity, and the engine that pushes them is a 4-amp electric motor. That means this trimmer will have ample power for hedge trimming. Unless you’re planning to prune trees with this (and you shouldn’t plan to do that), you should be able to get all the work on your to-do list finished.

This product has received many good reviews on Amazon.com. It’s perfect for pruning conifer hedges and all kinds of shrubs. Many praise this trimmer for its easy and comfortable grip and how handy it is when it comes to pruning even the tallest of hedges.

2. Earthwise CVPH43018 Corded Convertible Pole Hedge Trimmer

Not even one pound (0.4 kg) heavier is the similarly lightweight Earthwise trimmer, weighing 9.7 pounds (4.39 kg). The extra weight mainly comes from the additional .5 amps in the motor, which means more power for cutting.

The blades are 18 inches (0.45 m) and provide for a 3/4-inch (2 cm) cutting capacity. Also sporting adjustable angles for the blade (this one allows for 6 positions, up to 150 degrees), this is a pole trimmer that’s a little sturdier, a little heavier-duty than our first one, although extending to a little over 6 feet (1.8 m), it’s not for the tallest trimming projects.

The extension pole is fiberglass, so you may feel a little wiggle from the whole unit when you have the pole fully extended since you have got the blade and the motor all at the end of that pole. Be careful when using any hedge trimmers, sure, but especially when you have sharp blades running on the end of a stick.

Also, since this is a 2-in-1 unit, that means you can detach the pole, connect the handle and the trimmer, and have a regular old handheld hedge trimmer for those bushes that are not taller than you are. That’s a nice piece of versatility right there.

3. GARCARE Corded Electric Pole Hedge Trimmer

At 10 pounds (4.5 kg), this trimmer is a bad boy. It’s heavier than the others on our list, though not heavy enough to make you think, “I can’t use this thing.” It has got a 4.8-amp motor for some power, it extends to a little over 9 feet (2.74 m), and it has a 3/4-inch (2 cm) cutting capacity, meaning it can cut some hefty shrubbery.

This is a comfortable trimmer to hold despite its extra weight. Its aluminum pole feels a little sturdier than its fiberglass counterparts, and the blades adjust to 6 different angles.

This particular unit also converts to a pole saw, making its weight worth it since you’re essentially getting two different tools in one. Sure, hedge trimmers and pole saws are a lot alike, but they are, in fact, different, each intended for a specific task.

Before experimenting with this one, I was unfamiliar with the GARCARE brand, but I found nothing to indicate it was not a solid hedge trimmer. The trigger responded as it should, the blades cut everything I applied them to, and it was nice and quiet as an electric unit. I like being able to do yard work without damaging my hearing.

A Note About Telescoping Trimmers

As mentioned above, there comes a time in every hedge-trimming person’s adventures when the thing that needs trimming is out of reach. So we’re faced with 3 choices:

  • Skip it.
  • Excuse yourself by saying, “I can’t reach it.”
  • Get a ladder.

I know from personal, painful, resulting-in-stitches experience that taking power tools up on a ladder is always a dicey situation, and I’m the sort of person who doesn’t accept “I can’t reach it” as a viable option. And if you’re like me, then a telescoping trimmer may be the perfect solution for you.

A telescoping trimmer has poles nested inside one another so that you can move the cutting surface of your trimmer higher up. However, once you get it extended long enough, the weight imbalance can be tricky to manage.

Getting a lighter trimmer so that there’s less total mass to worry about keeping balanced will make things much easier.
